Officials said a panel of senior doctors and a forensic team will investigate allegations of medical negligence against a government hospital here after a 23-year-old died while on treatment.

It was claimed by family members of the deceased that Vaibhav Sharma, a resident of Anantpura Talib, died on Wednesday night when an oxygen mask caught fire on his face after direct current (DC) shock treatment and hung on his neck in the intensive care unit.

However, the authorities at the New Medical College Hospital, Kota, rejected the allegations of negligence, although they confirmed that the oxygen mask caught fire. They said the deceased was a tuberculosis patient with perforation of the gastrointestinal tract who was in critical condition. They said he was given CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) an hour before he received a DC shock to resuscitate him.

The accident happened around 10 pm on Wednesday.

The family said that Vibhav’s condition started to deteriorate around 3 pm, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit. He was given oxygen support around 10pm but when his condition did not improve he was put into cardioversion shock.

Vaibhav’s brother Gaurav claimed that his brother’s condition was fine after the electroconvulsive therapy and that the medical staff had retired to his room when suddenly his oxygen mask caught fire. Gaurav claimed that the medical staff fled and that he had to put out the fire, due to which he suffered burn injuries. Meanwhile, Vibhav suffered burn injuries all over his face and neck as the mask stuck to his face, Gaurav said.

However, NMCH supervisor Dr RP Meena said, the patient was already dead to death and DC shock was administered after an hour of CPR to revive him.

He said the deceased patient was already suffering from tuberculosis with an infection in the lungs and was admitted in a critical condition.

The hospital director, who described the fire in the DC’s post-shock oxygen mask as a rare occurrence, said the cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed.

Medical College Principal Dr Sangeeta Saxena said a 4-member panel comprising senior professors of surgery and forensic medicine has been set up to investigate the incident. She added that biomedical engineers have been called to look into the incident, adding that a report will be submitted within 24 hours.

However, Saxena claimed that the patient had already died due to his long illness.

DSP Harshraj said the police had filed a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to investigate the actual cause of death.

The relatives of the deceased, along with some leaders of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, organized a rally to demand compensation for the family.
