Yashasvi Jaiswal was delighted to bring his century on debut during the first Test against the West Indies at Windsor Park in Dominica on the second day, Thursday (July 13).
The 21-year-old expressed his gratitude after grabbing the opportunity with both hands. He said it was just the beginning of his Test career after remaining unbeaten in 143 runs off 350 balls, including 14 boundaries.
The left-handed batter described it as an “emotional moment” after reaching the three-figure mark.
Speaking to Jio Cinema at the stumps on day two, Jaiswal said:
“(It was) an emotional moment (in his century), I was very proud of myself, thanks to everyone, this is just the beginning and I want to make good progress. Opportunities in the Indian team are hard to come by, I want to thank everyone, the fans, the team management and Rohit Bhai.”
Jaiswal further said that he loves Test cricket and revealed the nature of the pitch after his amazing journey. He completed:
“The pitch is on the slower side and the pitch is very slow, it was tough and challenging, it was very hot and I wanted to keep doing it for my country, just play ball by ball and enjoy cricket.”
Mumbai batter added:
“I love cricket, I love the challenge, I enjoy the situation when the ball swings and swings. We worked hard on everything, I just came out to express myself.”
For starters, Yashasvi Jaiswal had previously scored two centuries followed by a belly in the same match for Rest of India against Madhya Pradesh in the 2023 Iran Cup. Mumbai’s batting average was 80.21 in his first-class career, and he scored 1,845 runs in 15 games of which he had nine hits.
Jaiswal (143*), who becomes the 17th Indian to score a century on debut, now has the highest score by an Indian on Test debut away from home. The opener broke the previous record set by former India captain Sourav Ganguly (131 against England in 1996).
He also hit the most balls by an Indian on his Test debut, surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin (322 balls against England in 1984).
Yashasvi Jaiswal helps India extend the lead on the second day
A clinical batting performance from debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal helped India take a lead by 163 runs at stumps on the second day.
Apart from him, India’s captain Rohit Sharma smashed his tenth Test century (103 from 221). The pair shared the highest scoring opening partnership against the West Indies in Tests over 239 runs.
Despite this, Shubman Gill failed to deliver the bat, scoring six runs off 11 balls during his first outing as a No. 3 batter.
At stumps on the second day, India were 312/2, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (143 out of 350) and Virat Kohli (36 out of 96) at the crease.
