The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee will broadcast the Gurbani of the Golden Temple on its own YouTube channel and other social media platforms. SGPC Chairman Harjinder Singh Dami said on Friday that he will also launch a satellite channel in the next three months.

“SGPC will launch its own YouTube channel on July 24 for Qurbani’s live broadcast,” Dhami said.

He added that the channel will be called “Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib Sri Amritsar” and will carry the SGPC logo.

Al-Dami was addressing the media after a special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers at the SGPC.

He said the Qurbani broadcast agreement with GNext Media (PTC channel), which is currently broadcasting Qurbani from the Sikh shrine, will expire on July 23.

He said Akal Takht asked the SGPC to start its own YouTube channel, after which a sub-committee was formed. In its report, the committee supported the launch of the If channel on YouTube. Dami said that members of the European Commission unanimously approved the proposal.

“Since these tasks are technical, a company will be contracted for the time being to start the service,” said Dami. He added that the services handled by the company are related to technology, equipment and required personnel, while broadcasting rights will remain with SGPC.

“The rights to broadcast Qurbani will be held with SGPC only and no TV channel, YouTube channel, website or social media platform will be able to broadcast it of their own free will,” said Dhami.

The development comes amid controversy over the telecast of Darbar Sahib’s Gurbani by the private channel. The Punjab Assembly, on June 20, passed the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill 2023, which aims to ensure free television broadcasts of Ghorbani. The move came after the AAP government led by Bhagwant Man approved an amendment to the Sikh Gurdwaras of the British era, 1925. However, the SGPC strongly opposed the amendment and accused the Punjab Cabinet of meddling in its affairs.

Meanwhile, Al-Dami said, SGPC will work on the basis of war to launch its own satellite channel, adding that they have also written to the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting in this regard. A delegation from the SGPC will soon meet the Union Minister. SGPC will secure the license to operate the satellite channel. If necessary, a separate company will be set up for this purpose.
