Former F1 driver and presenter Martin Brundle says he is delighted to see Daniel Ricciardo return to the F1 grid.

Red Bull recently announced that the Australian will be returning to the sport with AlphaTauri after the 2023 F1 Hungarian GP. Ricciardo will replace rookie Nyck de Vries, who has struggled to get out of the car so far and is unable to keep up with teammate Yuki Tsunoda.

Discussing the return of Daniel Ricciardo in a Sky Sports F1 In the column, Brundle wrote that he was surprised to hear the announcement. The Briton said he believes the 34-year-old will take more time off the sport to rediscover his motivations.

“I’m really happy to see it, but my honest reaction was, ‘Wow.'” Daniel would do that, right? It surprised me. Daniel had always talked about he’d lost his charm and needed his enthusiasm back, and so I didn’t think he’d accept that, unless there was some other agreement to go along with, ‘You do this and then on the way we’ll do that,’ he said.

“I’m sure he had six months in the sim and he wasn’t an F1 driver and that would hit him hard. And so I can fully understand the appeal of being one of the 20 on the grid. My overriding feeling here is does Formula 1 feel better when Daniel Ricciardo is on the grid And I hated seeing him have to hang out all weekend.”

Daniel Ricciardo worked with Red Bull as a reserve and simulator driver for the first half of the 2023 season before he had his chance to return to F1 with AlphaTauri. Speaking to the media after testing Pirelli tires on behalf of Red Bull, the Australian expressed his excitement at being back on the grid. He also shared his thoughts on the RB19 and acknowledged Red Bull team chief Christian Horner’s confidence in it.

“Yeah, I’m back! It’s one thing to get back in the car, but it’s another to get back in the Red Bull. And yeah, I feel like I got up pretty quickly. Christian (Horner) was delighted. I think he’s always been a big believer in me,” he said.

Ricciardo added that he is technically on loan at AlphaTauri until the end of the year.

“I’m excited to get back on the grid. I’ll be on loan at AlphaTauri until the end of the year. I mean, after taking the test today, of course, I feel ready and I can’t wait for that…”. Stay in the family,” he said.

It will be interesting to see if Daniel Ricciardo will be able to prove his worth on the grid and match, if not better, his teammate Yuki Tsunoda for the rest of the 2023 F1 season.
