Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and S Venkatanarayana Bhatti were sworn in as justices of the Supreme Court on Friday, bringing the Supreme Court’s workforce to 32.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachod took the oath of office to them at a ceremony organized in the hall in SC Annex on Friday morning. The Supreme Court has a strength of 34, and was staffed with 30, leaving it with four vacancies. To fill this in, the college chaired by CJI Chandrachud has debated and debated the names of Chief Justices and Senior High Court Justices who are eligible for appointment to the Supreme Court. Other members of the collegium are judges SK Cole, Sanjeev Khanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant.

The College’s July 5 resolution recommending the names of Judges Bhuyan and Bhatti said, “After carefully evaluating the merits, integrity and competence of qualified Chief Justices and Chief Justices of the High Courts and absorbing a large number of considerations, the Collegium has found ‘Judges of Bhuyan’ and Bhatti ‘to be deserving and suitable in all respects for their appointment Justices of the Supreme Court of India.

On July 12, Federal Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tweeted that the President had appointed them as Supreme Court justices.

Justice Bhuyan was appointed as a Judge of the Guwahati High Court on 17 October 2011. He is the most senior justice of his father’s High Court and has been the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court since 28 June 2022. The collegium said, “The rulings cover a wide range of issues related to law and justice” and that he is a judge of “With a good reputation for integrity and efficiency.”

Justice Bhatti was appointed as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 12 April 2013 and is the most senior in his father’s High Court. Transferred to Kerala High Court in March 2019 and has been serving as Chief Justice there since 1 June 2023.

The collegium noted that the Andhra Pradesh High Court has not had any representation on the Bench of the High Court since August 2022 and his appointment “apart from representation for the state of Andhra Pradesh…will provide added value in terms of his acquired knowledge and experience. He has good reputation, integrity and competence.”
