Nashik Reural Police has booked a 17-year-old boy for allegedly making objectionable Instagram posts on Lord Hanuman and Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb offending religious sentiments.
The incident raised tensions in the area and local villagers called on Thursday to burn down a garage run by the boy’s two brothers.
However, the police managed to bring the situation under control with the help of the local peace committee and detained the boy and sent him to the children’s reformatory in Nashik.
According to an FIR filed by the Nashik Rural Police, on Wednesday evening a debunked post appeared on Instagram about Lord Hanuman and Aurangzeb in the district. Tensions begin to mount as villagers from nearby villages begin to flock. “On Thursday, during the gang called by the local villagers, a group of unknown villagers set fire to a garage run by the boy’s brothers. The shop is owned by a policeman and rented to them. Some two-wheelers were damaged in the accident,” said one of the villagers.
The boy outlaw is a school dropout who works in a mutton shop. His father works in a woodworking shop.
IPS officer Rajnikant Chilumala, who is on probation and in charge of the Satana police station, confirmed that the police managed to control the situation with the help of the local peace committee and detained the boy and sent him to a reformatory.
No violation related to burning the shop was recorded.
When asked about the shop burning incident, the senior officer said that it is not clear yet and the investigation is underway.
Based on Patel’s complaint, Local Police Kachrilal Bagdi, the police detained the minor under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony), and 295A (willful and malicious acts, which aims to stir up the religious sentiments of any group by insulting their religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.
Nashik Rural District Police Inspector Shahaji Omabe could not be reached for comment.
Earlier, there was tension in Kolhapur and Ahmednagar districts following the incident.
