To bring much needed relief to the people of Manimajra, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) on Friday restored the water supply.
For more than three days there was no water supply at Manimagra. The densely populated city belt has been relying on water tankers after the pipeline gave way during heavy rains.
On Thursday evening, the experiment was conducted after the repair and the supply initially started for two hours on Friday.
The authorities stated that a proper trial was conducted and the water supply was restored. From Saturday morning there will be a water supply at full pressure.
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Commissioner Anindita Mitra said, “On July 10, a 24-inch potable water supply pipeline was swept away by the deluge causing complete outages in the entire Manimagra district. The MC Public Health ward has been working tirelessly and has been providing water through tankers to the residents Manimagra from 6 am to 8 pm.”
She added, “Last night (Thursday), within a record three days, the entire pipeline was constructed and laid. After that, the test was successfully carried out. The MC was able to resume services on (Friday) evening for two hours under low pressure. As of tomorrow (Saturday) ), Manimagra will have drinking water as usual, at full pressure.”
Meanwhile, the rest of the city is already affected by the damage to the Bhakra pipes that carry water to the entire city.
Two major Bhakir pipelines – Phase 3 and Phase 1 – were completely damaged due to heavy rains on Sunday. Officials have stated that it will take another 15 days for the Phase 3 pipeline to operate. They said a water pressure trial that Phase 1 can handle will take place by the end of the week when the work is complete. Officials said the damage from the rains also reduced the capacity of the fifth and sixth phase pipelines.
There are six phases at the Kajauli Hydroworks which supply water to Chandigarh. Of these six stages, stages 2, 4, 5, and 6 operate and supply the entire city. The authorities have also reduced the hours of water supply.
“The total water requirement in the city is 80 million gallons per day and we have 60 million gallons per day. Therefore, there is a deficit of 20 million gallons per day. At the same time, we also have to provide 12 MGD – 6 MGD each to Chandimandir and Panchkula. So, there’s a 12 MGD deficit as well. Union Territory Adviser Dharam Pal said this shortfall will be shared proportionately with Chandimandir, Chandigarh and Panchkula.
The Sukhna Gate opened again
Two days later, the Sokhna floodgate was opened again on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday as the water level reached the danger mark. Engineering pavilion officials said that as it rained upriver, the floodgate had to be opened.
Talking to Indian ExpressC.P. Ojha, Chandigarh Department Chief Engineer said, “One door was opened at a lower height, i.e. 4 inches. It was opened from 1.40 am to 9.10 am.”
The lake level is over 1,163 feet high.
Chandigarh Traffic Police also advised residents to avoid the road near the lake.
“One of the gates of Sukhna Lake has been opened to release water in Sukhna Choe as the water level has reached the danger level. Traffic from bridges on Sukhna Choe has been closed at Kishangarh Village Workshop, Shastrinagar and CTU,” it was specified.
