Banga, along with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, visited the center, which collects and analyzes academic and administrative data for 11.5 million students, nearly half a million teachers and 50,000 schools across Gujarat.
World Bank President Ajay Banga on Sunday said there is a need to replicate the Command and Control Centre, also called Vidya Samiksha Kendra, in Gandhinagar in Gujarat not only in other parts of the country but also in the world as a leadership model.
Banga, along with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, visited the center, which collects and analyzes academic and administrative data for 11.5 million students, nearly half a million teachers and 50,000 schools across Gujarat.
A focus on education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting sustainable development, said Secretary Yellen, adding that the center “points to the best that the World Bank and other development partners can offer from smartly designed projects with tangible results and catalyzing other innovations.”
The best way to be effective is to take a good idea that works and iterate. I am very anxious that ideas like this are carried across the country, and of course that requires the country to work with us. But I’m also keen to take it out of the country and show that as a leadership model elsewhere.
Banga said the center can be highlighted as an example of how development can be achieved in a country with a large number of young people.
Banga emphasized that India has more young people than any other country and they will have a demographic dividend if they get good education, health care, air and water.
Banga said that he will visit New Delhi in a few days and will tell Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting that he thinks this command and control center is a great idea that can be deployed elsewhere in India and abroad.
Yellen said in a joint press conference that the success of this program prompted the government to repeat it in other states.
Each of the leaders understood the center’s performance and interacted with the staff, student beneficiaries, and parents as well as the teachers. They took questions from kids, many of whom wanted to know the dignitaries’ childhoods, their likes and dislikes etc.
The ‘Vidya Samiksha Kendra’ project has been commended by the Union Government for boosting attendance, alleviating overcrowding in schools, and improving student-teacher ratios.
The Union Government plans to replicate the success of the project, which is co-financed by partners including the World Bank and the Gujarat government, in other states.
