Batting coach Vikram Rathore on Sunday said Shubman Gill has the attributes required to bat at the crucial third position in the Indian Test Line lineup as he can change gears as per requirements and should not be judged on the basis of a single failure.
India won their first Test against the West Indies by an innings and 141 runs, but Gill’s first match at number three, replacing Chitchwar Pujara, did not start well. He was out for just 6 in India’s only innings as captain Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal hit hundreds and Virat Kohli contributed 76.
“Three openers were supposed to play, so one of them had to go to number three and the suggestion came from Shubman’s end as his reasoning was that he played all his cricket for Punjab and India A either at number three or number four and that is what he said during a press conference:
“We can’t judge him on one innings basis. He has a lot of time. He has the technique and the temperament to play time if needed and can also play an attacking game when a move is needed. He can move the game forward. That’s what we need in the third because he could be useful.” In Captain Rohit’s Hundred, the former Test opener said the India captain’s game-changing ability makes him the player he is.
“In the last series against Australia too, he scored a hundred. There’s no worry about his batting. We’ve seen he can change his game as per requirement. Like he did against Australia and now here he is. Knowing you need to change your game is one thing but being able to do it is different. He can did that “.
