Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has criticized Eder Militao for his performance in Tuesday’s (May 2) La Liga defeat by Real Sociedad.
La Liga champions Real Madrid lost 2-0 to Real Sociedad at the Real Arena on Tuesday night. Takefusa Kubo and Ander Barnetxea scored in the second half to seal the defeat against 10-man Los Blancos in Matchday 33 of La Liga.
Los Merengues’ defenders were below par at Sociedad, with Militao, in particular, cutting a frustrating figure. Under pressure from Alexander Sorloth in the 47th minute, Militao slid in and then played a backpass to Thibaut Courtois. The pass, which was hit with great force, evaded Courtois at the near post, which led to a soft entry from former Real Madrid player Kubo at the far end.
After the match, Ancelotti criticized Militao’s performance and demanded that he reform his behavior. When asked to comment on Militao’s display against Sociedad, Ancelotti said (via MARCA):
“He should wake up soon.”
Militao also reacted badly while setting up Real Sociedad’s second goal. The center back didn’t come to Lucas Vazquez’s aid when Barnetxea was battling him, instead standing calmly at bay. The right-back then moved inside before finding the bottom corner near Courtois’ goal with a powerful shot.
Real Madrid have three days to recover from this setback, as they are scheduled to face Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday night (May 6). On Tuesday (May 9), he will meet Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Real Madrid lacked penetration and leadership in the defeat against Real Sociedad
Playing without Karim Benzema (rested) and Vinicius Junior (stopped) against Real Sociedad, Los Blancos would not have exuded the composure required to beat such a worthy opponent. Most of their shots were guesswork and they struggled to connect in the final third.
They also didn’t have Luka Modric and Federico Valverde (both injured), which resulted in unparalleled performances in midfield. Aurelien Tchoameni looked confident in midfield but Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos had no ideas.
Things turned from bad to worse for Real Madrid in the 61st minute, when Dani Carvajal saw a second yellow after a bad tackle on Ayhin Munoz. The players protested vehemently but the referee’s decision had already changed by then. A combination of poor defending, red cards, and unfortunate absences saw the madridistas perform poorly and below par at Sociedad.
