The incident took place last week near Edavanna in Malappuram, but it came to light on Monday after pictures of the alleged act circulated.

In an incident involving moral policing, some men allegedly misbehaved with a girl and beat her brother when they were waiting at a bus stand in North Kerala district, which prompted the police to take action.

The incident took place last week near Edavana in Malappuram, but it came to light on Monday after pictures of the alleged act circulated.

An officer at Idavana Police Station said that following the incident, a board was placed near the bus stand warning students not to congregate or stand in that area after 5pm and threaten local residents to take action. “The painting was removed the moment it was brought to our attention,” he said.

Police said five people, including a CPI(M) local secretary and a member of the Left Party panchayat, were arrested in connection with the incident after the girl lodged a complaint.

The men allegedly misbehaved with the siblings after the girl objected to someone taking pictures of them while they were waiting at the bus stop, the officer said.

On 15 July, based on the girl’s complaint, a case was filed under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing harm), 509 (insulting a woman’s modesty) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 119(b) (taking pictures or taking pictures of the woman, police said) Videos of women have been recorded in a manner affecting their privacy) according to Kerala Police Act.

Police said five people were later arrested on July 16 in connection with the case, and since they were both released on bail the same day, they were released on bail.
