The Nepal government has said that opening borders with neighboring countries creates problems in security, law and order in the country.
In a letter to Rashtriya Sarokar and Samanwaya Samiti – Upper House Committee of the Nepali Parliament which deals with issues of national interest and liaises with the Government – Ministry of Home Affairs
Open borders with neighbors, he said, had become a challenge to national “security,” and at times created law and order problems.
The Home Office letter, which was read on Monday by Sita Kavli Wagle, the commission’s secretary, said Nepal’s long and porous borders with two neighbors – India and China – had become a challenge to its security.
Nepal shares a border of 1850 km with India with no travel restrictions for nationals of either side. It shares a 1,400 km border with China, with traffic regulated.
The letter said that the opening of the borders contributed to the smuggling of people and drugs, and the smuggling of arms and weapons, in addition to the crossing of the borders by fugitives and seeking refuge in Nepal.
However, the Home Office letter did not provide any indications about any plan to regulate the borders with India.
