Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra is disappointed at the lack of female footballers in the Indian women’s cricket team lately. While there are opportunities given to new faces, they weren’t always part of the XI.
Chopra gave the example of former Indian legend Jhulan Goswami and explained how her support from a young age was crucial to her success.
In her column for IANS, this is what Anjum Chopra writes about India not producing enough pacers:
“Are fast bowlers not allowed to bowl on a slow surface? What are the ideal conditions for fast bowlers to showcase their skills? Whether it be senior cricket, emerging teams or under-19s; we seem to have underestimated our fast bowlers. Golan did not become Goswami is a match winner overnight; it took time and support. Yes, she was hard working and skillful.”
In this regard, Chopra added:
Meghna Singh, supposed replacement for Shikha Pandey, is still traveling. Monica Patel – does she have offers behind her to be there in India 15, if yes, when will she play? How long have we been looking at bowling partner for Jhulan Goswami? Or now; since she retired For nearly a year now we have been looking to identify bowlers in India; in fact, now from both ends.”
Anjum Chopra on India’s approach to beating Bangladesh
Anjum Chopra also questioned the Indian batsman for stumbling on slow pitches in Bangladesh. I was disappointed that hitters didn’t try to adjust to the conditions despite knowing the pitch was going to be on the slower side.
In this regard, Chopra said:
“Yes, the playing field at the Dhaka stadium was not ideal for stroke play but was the team ready to adapt? At this time of the year one would expect rain and sluggish surfaces, especially in Bangladesh. But we already know that; right?” Did the team collectively or individual players do their homework? Batting technique, scores and approach to the whole match/series seemed tense. Why?”
Indian batting showed signs of weakness in their first ever ODIs as well against Bangladesh as they compiled for just 113.
