A mobile phone wholesaler from Vadodara has been arrested for alleged fraud related to the Input Tax (ITC) credit for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) of Rs 27.7 crore, officials said Monday. The ITC was leveraged through shell companies in Delhi and Mumbai, officials said, adding that the accused has been sent to judicial custody.

Acting on intelligence, Director General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence Unit of Surat Zonal recently carried out raids on the house of accused Qadri Mohammad Mateen in Fatigung in Vadodara. He runs a mobile company called Blueberry. At the same time, raids were carried out in the Delhi-based Sohan Industry.

After several incriminating documents were recovered, Qadri’s statements were recorded by officials. He allegedly admitted to making transactions with M/S Sohan Industry from a broker named Ravi Arya via a WhatsApp group and ten other companies from Delhi and Mumbai over the past few months.

Qadri also allegedly mentioned in his statement that he had received goods of mobile phones worth up to Rs. 153.89 crore, inclusive of ITC worth Rs. 27.70 crore. People familiar with the matter said that while the goods were supplied by some other companies, the invoices were provided by companies in different places. Officials checked all 11 buildings related to the alleged corporate case and found that the addresses listed were all bogus.

Qadri passed ITC with a sum of Rs 27.70 crore to different people. He was arrested on Sunday and appeared before the Surat District Court on Monday and placed in judicial custody. Qadri’s lawyer, Nadeem Chaudhry, said, “Qadri bought mobile phones via a WhatsApp group run by another person, Ravi Arya, and received bills from various places.

He had paid the bill amount and was not aware of the bills as is the case for some companies, stores and exhibitions in different places. The main racket was handled by Aman Rohtak, who was partnered by Ravi Arya. Kadri runs a wholesale mobile phone business in Vadodara. Qadri cannot verify each company whether it is genuine or fake, but he regularly got the goods he ordered from the vendors.”
