The Uttar Pradesh government has alleged a significant increase in the number of wild animals in the state in the past five years, saying that the number of tigers in the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve alone has doubled over the period.
A government spokesperson said the numbers of other wild animals such as the elephant, stork and eagle had also risen dramatically.
The spokesperson said that while the number of tigers across the state has increased from 118 to 173 in five years, it has gone from just 25 in 2018 to 65 currently in the Pilibhit reserve. The number of elephants increased from 265 to 352, and storks from 13,670 to 17,586.
I learned that the government is preparing to highlight the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve as an example of conservation measures and to promote it as an eco-tourism destination.
In 2020, the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve received the Tx2 International Award for doubling the number of tigers in four years. It was notified as a tiger reserve in 2014.
Sudhir Sharma, Chief Forest Conservation Officer, told The Indian Express, “Pilibhit is definitely a wildlife conservation success story. We attribute this to the effective management of
Grasslands and bodies of water that helped increase the numbers of herbivores and predators.”
According to the 2021 State Forestry Report, the state’s forest and tree cover has increased by 794 square kilometers, which in turn has helped preserve biodiversity.
