Heavy rains were witnessed for more than three hours on Tuesday in Surat and other parts of south Gujarat, bringing normal life to a halt. Many areas were flooded due to water cuts and travelers were having difficulty reaching their destinations. Traffic jams with huge lines of vehicles are seen at different intersections of the city.

As the rain continued till 1.20pm, drains overflowed in many low-lying areas of Surat city and water-cutting incidents were reported from Adajan, Limbayat, Udhna, Sagrampura, Katargam, Limbayat, Rander, Varachha and Kapodara.

However, there was some relief as the afternoon rain subsided. Municipal officials from different regions arrived at different locations to assess the phenomenon of waterlogging.

People waded through knee-deep water, while motorcyclists experienced problems when water got into vehicles’ engines.

The Surat railway station complex also filled with water. Heavy rains also provided an opportunity for auto-rickshaw drivers to dump their passengers.

According to sources in the Surat Municipal Corporation Flood Control Department, the rainfall from 6 am to 1 pm on Tuesday in eight districts of Surat city are: Central District 77 mm, Randar District 35 mm, Katargam District 56 mm, Varachah District A 86 mm, Vracha B area 36 mm, Limpiat area 102 mm, Athuwa area 30 mm, Odena area 15 mm.

Following the tree uprooting incidents, Foundation Fire Department officials arrived at the scene and cleared the branches that were obstructing traffic. Short circuit incidents also occurred. After heavy rains, an apartment gallery collapsed in Haripura district. But officials said that no one was injured in the accident.

According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature recorded in the city of Surat was 31 degrees, and the minimum was 27.5 degrees. Officials said the southwesterly wind was blowing at a speed of 5 kilometers per hour.
