Gary Tunnon knew that another Brazilian jiu-jitsu would always be his greatest weapon in mixed martial arts.
The American BJJ legend was on the receiving end of some severe punishment from Shamil Gasanov in the first round of their fight at ONE Fight Night 12.
Despite absorbing some hard attacks from Jasanov, Tonon found enough to reverse the tempo and force the Russian submission expert to submit to a terrifying knee bar.
In his insider interview with Mitch Chilson, Tonon had no choice but to breathe a sigh of relief that he survived the early attack and won the surrender.
“Well before we say anything, he beats the squat out of you there. Give it a round of applause for Shamil. Thank God for the submissions.”
Jasanov went on a tear against Tonon in the first round of their featherweight bout at the famous Lumpini Boxing Stadium and was fighting “The Lion Killer” from a more defensive standpoint.
The first part of the second round was still all Jasanov, but Tonon managed to work it out.
Tonon was backed up in the corner when he rolled brilliantly and threw Jasanov to the ground.
Carefully isolating his leg, Tonon slowly worked out traps that would leave Gasanov in danger of submission.
Then Tonon showed off his BJJ pedigree as he rolled onto his back and locked into a nasty knee bar. Gassanov, one of the strongest fighters in the division, was in such excruciating pain that he let out a horrible shriek before tapping his hand on the canvas.
The win was Tonon’s second in a row and his eighth in nine MMA matches.
