As per IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) classification, Orange Alert is for rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm per day, while Red Alert is issued when rain above 204.5 mm is forecast for 24 hours.
Mumbai and its suburbs saw moderate to heavy rain during the day, officials said, and the meteorological department issued an orange alert for the city on Wednesday predicting heavy to very heavy rain in some places.
The Met Office has issued a red alert for Raigad and nearby Palghar districts and forecast heavy to heavy rains in a few places and very heavy rains in isolated places on Wednesday. An orange alert went off for Thane.
As per the IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) classification, an orange alert is for rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm per day, while a red alert is issued when precipitation above 204.5 mm is forecast for 24 hours.
Meanwhile, as the day progressed, the rain intensity decreased in Mumbai on Tuesday. Most areas of the city and its suburbs also received light or moderate rain with intermittent bouts of heavy rain.
The city civic authority said Mumbai, Eastern Suburbs, and Western Suburbs received 17.44mm, 22.55mm, and 18.87mm respectively between 8 am and 6 pm.
Earlier in the day, suburban services of the Central Railway were affected by rain, along with an engine failure of a high-speed train during the morning rush hours.
Intermittent heavy rains lashed Bandra, Dahisar, Chembur, Fort, Matunga, Byculla and other areas of the city Monday night, according to civic officials.
They said there was no significant waterlogging anywhere on Tuesday morning. Road traffic was generally normal.
Central Railways Chief Public Relations Officer Dr. Shivraj Manaspur told PTI that the Gorakhpur-LTT Superfast Express engine had developed a technical hurdle at Atgaon station in neighboring Thane district, but they had arranged a relief drive for the train.
He said that the trains on the route were diverted through a loop line.
Some commuters complained that suburban services in CR had been delayed by 10-15 minutes since early morning, but after an incident of engine failure, trains were delayed by 20-25 minutes.
They also claimed that some suburban trains were canceled and as a result crowds swelled on platforms and trains during the morning rush hour. A Western Railway spokesperson said suburban services on its network were normal.
Civil officials said bus services in the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) project were normal and there was no road diversions due to rain.
In its ‘Area Forecasts and Warnings’ for the next five days issued on Monday, IMD Mumbai is forecasting ‘heavy to very heavy rains in isolated locations’ in the city on Tuesday.
IMD officials in Mumbai said their observatories in Colaba (representative of the island city) and Santa Cruz (representative of the suburbs) recorded 102.4mm and 109.7mm of rain, respectively, in the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Tuesday.
