New Kerala Blasters signing Joshua Sotirio has suffered a major setback after suffering an injury on Sunday, 16th July. the bridge Today, the Australian striker will likely miss the majority of next season after sustaining an ankle injury.
The Sydney-born joined the club just two months ago from A-League club Newcastle Jets on a two-year contract, with the Blasters privately paying an undisclosed transfer fee. However, he picked up the injury during a pre-season training session and will now have to undergo surgery. The recovery process is also expected to be long.
Over the past two days, there has been a lot of speculation about the 27-year-old’s injury after a video of him limping and being helped into his car went viral. While fans hoped it was a minor accident, the news of his prolonged absence will dampen their spirits, especially as the season approaches.
Reportedly, the striker will miss the upcoming Durand Cup, which is scheduled to kick off on August 3.
With the Durand Cup coming up close and fast, the Kerala Blasters have limited time to find a replacement for Jaushua Sotirio if they decide to. After the club paid some transfer fees for his signature, he would be largely sidelined following his injury. Finding a capable replacement within time and budget would be a huge task for Blasters.
However, this is not their only headache. The departure of Sahel Abdul Samad and Ayush Adhikari (as reported by SportsKida) has left a big hole in the squad. Furthermore, in Sotirio’s absence, KBFC only had three available overseas options – Marko Leskovic, Adrian Luna and Dimitri Diamantakos.
As it stands, this didn’t turn out to be a nice build for the Kerala Blasters’ upcoming season.
