A total of 63,606 people, including 30,354 men, 24,868 women and 8,384 children, are affected by the floods in 14 districts of the state.

An official report said that the flood situation in Assam has improved as the number of people affected fell to more than 63,000 on Wednesday.

However, one new death due to drowning was reported, bringing the death toll from this year’s floods to nine so far, says the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report.

A total of 63,606 people, including 30,354 men, 24,868 women and 8,384 children, are affected by the floods in 14 districts of the state.

The number of affected people reached 88,911 in 16 districts the previous day.

The Brahmaputra River was flowing over the danger mark in Dhobri, Tezpur and Nimatighat, while its tributaries were showing a declining trend in other areas.

The affected districts are Barpetta, Cherang, Darang, Dehmaghi, Dibrugarh, Gulaghat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari and Sivasagar.

Golaghat is the worst affected district with 27,526 people living under the floods, followed by 15,137 in Sivasagar, and 14,892 in Nalbari.

A total of 51 relief camps and distribution centers have been set up in Chirang, Dehmaji, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar districts.

It added that a total of 272 villages were still under water and crops were damaged in 2,863.76 hectares of land.

Eleven bridges were breached in Udalgori district, while a similar number of roads were damaged in Nalbari and Sivasagar districts.

It added that widespread erosion was reported in Pungaygaon, Cherang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur and Sivasagar districts.
