National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) which is undertaking the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project on Thursday announced that it had on Wednesday awarded the final contract for the civil package (C3) for the 135-kilometre stretch between Shilvata and Zaroli village on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.
The alignment includes seven tunnels and the longest bridge of 2 km over the Vaitarna River in Maharashtra.
With this, all three civil packages have been awarded for the Maharashtra part: construction of Mumbai terminal (Bandra Kurla complex) (C1), 21 km tunnel including 7 km undersea tunnel (C2) and 135 km of alignment (C3).
This also marks the award of all 11 civil beams for the 508-kilometre Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Corridor, which includes a 465-kilometre bridge, 12 high-speed railway stations, three trolley depots and 28 10-kilometre steel bridges. From the bridge, 24 river bridges, nine tunnels, including India’s first 7-kilometer undersea tunnel.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Express train project has been divided into 28 contract packages, out of which 11 are civil packages, which were awarded in a period of 33 months.
The first civil contract for the construction of 237-kilometre bridges, including four terminals (Vapi, Bilimora, Surat and Bharuch) and the Surat roller coaster depot in Gujarat was awarded on October 28, 2020, which was also the largest civil contract awarded in India. The last civil contract for the 135 km bridge with three stations (Thane, Viarar and Poisar) in Maharashtra was awarded on July 19.
Meanwhile, to expedite bridge construction, for the first time in India, complete 40-meter girders weighing 970 tons were launched by a full-span launch equipment suite: Straddle Carrier, Bridge Gantry, Girder Transporter and Girder Launcher, which are designed and manufactured in India. This technology is about 10 times faster than traditional segment firing technology and has introduced a new dimension to the construction industry.
This huge infrastructure project is expected to consume 1.6 crore cubic meters of cement and 17,000 metric tons of steel and will act as a catalyst to give a boost to the cement and steel industries.
Bids for track work were also awarded for the entire bullet train section in Gujarat, i.e. 352 kilometers out of a total of 508 kilometres.
Training of Indian engineers and work leaders on the high-speed rail system of the said corridor has already commenced. About 1,000 engineers/work leaders/technicians are scheduled to be trained at the specially constructed facility at Surat Warehouse.
