Atit Sheth’s performances in domestic cricket for Baroda and West Zone in the recently concluded Duleep Cup have forced many fans to take notice of a quality all-rounder bowler.
There was a lot of talk about India’s inability to find a versatile player after Hardik Pandya. They continue to support Shardul Thakur in the external tests as he provides the balance the team needs in lockdown conditions.
It is only natural for any multi-maneuver player in the country to constantly compare his progress with that of Pandya or Thakur. but, Speaking exclusively to Sportskeeda, Atit Sheth explained why he focused entirely on trying to improve his game and not comparing himself to anyone else. He said:
“I think I’m not competing with Shardul Thakur, Hardik Pandya or anyone else. I feel like every player is their own skill set and their own role. The real competition for me is to keep doing my best in whatever opportunities I get, be it the Duleep Trophy, Or the next Deodhar Trophy, or the future India A tours if I’m selected. I have to keep improving.”
Despite his all-around ability, Sheth has yet to play a single IPL game nor has he been selected by any team. In this regard, he added:
“To be selected in the IPL I have to do well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy because that’s the same format. There are trials too. Last year I was called up for trials by Sunrisers, Punjab and Gujarat but I couldn’t go anywhere because I was on India’s tour (in Bangladesh). So the idea is to do my best in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Cup and do well in the trials because that’s all that’s under my control. “
Team India’s next Test assignment will be at the end of 2023 away to South Africa. Once again, the role of an all-rounder bowler will be crucial and they can look at Atit Sheth as a possible replacement for Thakur. In this, Seth saw:
“If my name comes up in the Iran Cup, I have to perform well. India A might also tour South Africa in January, so the aim would be to do a good tour there as well. I’ve done one tour so far and if I get a chance at another, it helps me get used to the conditions. The aim is to perform wherever I get a chance and who knows what might happen.”
I come to Sheth about taking advice from the stars of Baroda
Baroda has already produced some good cricketers for India like Munaf Patel and also all-rounders like Irrfan Pathan and Hardik Pandya. Atit Sheth opened up about how he always tries to add more to his game by striking up a conversation with the aforementioned cricketers when they are in Baroda.
In this he said:
“Whenever I meet Irfan Bhai, Munaf Bhai or Hardik, I take advice from them about batting and bowling and what adjustments to make while playing at higher levels. So when they are in Baroda I go to them for advice and their advice helps me a lot.”
After an impressive performance at the Dulep Trophy, Atit Sheth could be well prepared for the all-rounder bowling seam role in the near future in Test form.
