ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s law minister said Thursday that former Prime Minister Imran Khan could be jailed for life if he is found guilty of endangering national security by exposing a controversial diplomatic contact known as “Cypher”.
Khan used a telegram sent by the Pakistani embassy in Washington in March last year to blame the United States for orchestrating his ouster from power a month later.

But the nature of the crime would change if the code was made public and its contents leaked for personal gain, then the accused could be sentenced to up to 14 years in prison.
He added, “Share or publish confidential documents for a personal interest or if it harms the national interest, the category (sentence) is 14 years old.”
Fourteen years imprisonment is the maximum penalty in Pakistan and is also considered a life sentence.
Tarar clarified that no confidential official document could be published or shared with anyone, saying that Imran was summoned by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for questioning on July 25 in this regard.
National security was endangered by the indiscriminate use of the ambassador, as evidenced by the sectarian manifesto of (former assistant prime minister) Azam Khan. The head of PTI has used it for his own political motives.”
Tarar said Khan revealed the sword’s contents during one of his political rallies, endangering the country’s national security.
The Minister of Law affirmed that the ambassador has not been returned to the concerned authorities, adding that the case against the former prime minister will be investigated thoroughly on the basis of merit.
The sword saga re-emerged after Azam Khan recorded a statement that Khan used it for political purposes.
Khan was previously involved in dozens of cases brought against him after his fall in April of last year.
His party is also under pressure and several senior leaders have left him.
