In yet another major crackdown on Islamic State units operating in India, the National Intelligence Agency on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old student after extensive searches of his home and rented accommodation in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh. This came a day after the agency arrested five possible ISIS unit suspects from across Bengaluru.
The agency filed an FIR against the youth, an alleged member of a proscribed terrorist organization, on Wednesday (July 19). The accused has been identified as Faizan Ansari alias Faiz, who is a student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) at UP.
The NIA conducted searches at his home in Lohardaga district of Jharkhand and a rented room in Aligarh on 16-17 July, resulting in the recovery of several electronic devices and incriminating materials/documents.
According to the National Intelligence Agency, Faizan, along with his associates and other unknown persons, conspired to support ISIS activities in India and spread the group’s propaganda through social media. The agency added that the plot was primarily aimed at carrying out terrorist attacks in India for the benefit of ISIS.
Investigations revealed that Faizan and his associates had pledged allegiance to the terrorist group. He was also actively involved in the process of radicalization of the “new converts” to bolster the Cadre’s base.
The NIA said Faizan was also in contact with ISIS operatives based abroad, who were guiding him on recruitment. Along with other ISIS members, the young man has been plotting violent acts and contemplating ‘migrations’ to the theater of ISIS conflict abroad.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
The National Intelligence Agency, which firmly adheres to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy of “zero tolerance” for terrorism, averted a major attack by breaching its terror unit in Jharkhand. Not just this, a day earlier, the agency also prevented a major attack by breaching an ISIS unit in Karnataka. In doing so, I partially realized the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s determination to root out all forms of terrorism.
The Karnataka unit was being run by a person named Junaid from Baku in Azerbaijan, along with the accused Mangalore blast from jail. It is alleged that Junaid was in contact with the ISI who sent him explosives possibly across the Gujarat or Punjab border.
According to the sources, the accused were carrying hand grenades and were planning a major attack. In this case, the National Intelligence Agency seized four walkie-talkies, seven pistols, ammunition, two daggers and other incriminating materials in this case. All the defendants in this case are in the age group of 25 to 35 years old and were using digital payment applications for financial transactions.
