More than 1,700 lawyers in the city of Surat on Thursday staged a walk-off against the proposed new court complex in Giyaf village near Sachin GIDC. They also submitted a warrant to the Commissioner Ayush Oak seeking a new site within the city limits for the new court complex.
Lawyers abandoned their work as they took part in the rally, which impeded normal traffic. Strict police arrangements were in place outside the complex whereby only representatives of the bar community were allowed to enter the campus and interview Oak.
The lawyers stated in the note that they are not willing to travel to the village of Jiaf, which is more than 15 kilometers from the current court complex. Other government offices such as the Surat Municipal Office, the District Panchayat Office, the Compound, and the offices of various departments are located in the city boundary area. So, why has the court complex been changed so far? the note reads.
“The work of lawyers is related to revenue, the municipal corporation, the district collector and various other government departments. The existing court complex has all these offices nearby. There is no reason to shift the courts to Giyaf. We have asked the collector to find alternative space. We are also looking for him on our side,” said Vice President of the Surat District Bar Association, Amar Patil.
Faced with space constraints at the existing county court complex in the Athoallins area, lawyers previously demanded an alternative site for more space from the state government. The plot of land was in Giaf Village then.
