After a video clip of two women from the Cookie-Zoome community being paraded naked and sexually assaulted Manipur Surfaced, actors Priyanka Chopra Kareena Kapoor reacted sharply to the appalling violence against women in the state. The incident occurred on May 4, and while the FIR, on charges including kidnapping, gang and murder, had been registered against “unidentified armed persons”, two months earlier, it was only after the video emerged that the police took action.
Priyanka wrote on her Instagram story, “It took the video to go viral… 77 days after the heinous crimes were committed… before action was taken. Justification? Reasons? It doesn’t matter – no matter what and why, circumstantial or circumstantial, we can’t allow women to be pawns in any game.”
Priyanka is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and she speaks out on women’s safety. In her memo, the actress also implored citizens to unite their voices for swift justice, writing, “Collective shame and anger must now be channeled with a unified voice to only one thing – swift justice.” She added the hashtags “Together in Shame” and “Justice for the Women of Manipur”.
Kareena Kapoor Khan also took to her Instagram story and wrote, “Deeply disturbed by the situation in Manipur. All words condoning crimes mean nothing until action is taken. Quickly 💔.”
Earlier on Thursday, actors Akshay Kumar, Kiara Advani, Sonu Sood, Richa Chadha, Renuka Shahan and more responded to the shocking video. Actress Selina Jaitley also took to Twitter to demand that the government should crack down on those involved in the crime. She tweeted, “I am unable to sleep or eat since I saw the #Manipur_Violence videos a few hours ago. Trembling with rage, pain, and rage again. Violence is violence…. Ethnic, non-racial, whatever the reason, violence is violence, violence.” Anti-women is not cultural, it is criminal.”
Protecting women and children must be a top priority for the authorities. To see this barbaric heinous crime against women shook me to the core, I urge and have faith in the government to take such drastic action that no one even in their dreams would dare to think of trying anything like this again!!! “#ManipurBurning #ManipurCrisis,” Selena concluded.
