Three players from Gujarat will be among the eight table tennis players from India who will represent the country at the World University Games which begin in China next week.
Gainel Mehta, Namna Jayaswal and Radhapriya Goel have made it into the Indian squad for the Games, which are set to start in Chengdu on July 28.
While Mehta and Jayaswal are students at Maharaja Krishnakumarsinji University Bhavnagar (MKBU) in Bhavnagar, Goel is a student at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) in Gandhinagar. The three were selected in Team India based on their performance in the selection trials held in Mohali on 12 and 13 June.
And for the first time, TT players from Gujarat have been selected to represent India at the World University Games.
Mehta was selected for the Indian men’s team, which includes Mudit Dhani, Wesley Do Rosario, Divyansh Srivastava and Jehu Himnaculbudingita. Danny is from Mumbai and is studying at New York University. Wesley de Rosario is a student at Chitkara University in Rajpura, Punjab while Himnaculpuengita is a student at Mizoram University, Izwal.
On the other hand, the women’s team consists of Jaiswal, Joel and Ananya Basak of Chitkara University, Anjali Rohilla of Punjab University and RH Mridula of Madras University.
Mehta and Jayaswal have represented Gujarat in several national events, but the World University Games will be their first international event. While Mehta is a Sports Authority of Gujarat (SAG) athlete, Jayaswal is also a former SAG and SAG Center of Excellence athlete.
The World University Games are scheduled to start on July 28 and end on August 8.
