The Chandigarh administration has given the green light to demolish and rebuild the 70-year-old dilapidated residential quarters of the Indian Air Force (IAF) located in Sectors 31 and 47. The project will cost around Rs 150 crore and the houses will be built as per modern design and new standards.
A meeting of Air Force officials, who had come specially from New Delhi led by Group Commander Kapil Giuliani and Chandigarh administration was held on Friday where the latter gave green light to the project. The houses were constructed in the year 1960. The IAF housing quarters in Sectors 31 and 47 have a population of about 192, and are in poor condition, with the walls beginning to crack and crack. The Air Force has been following up on the matter with the Chandigarh administration, seeking a nod to rebuild such properties.
Emphasizing the development, Home Minister Nitin Yadav told Indian Express that the reconstruction had been given the green light and the two parties had met and resolved all these issues.
A senior officer in the Chandigarh Engineering Wing stated that the design of the new residential quarters will be different. For now, like those on the ground floor plus the first floor, the new layout will be very different. “Now, according to the new design, it will be an additional floor. All the houses will be built this way as the previous houses are ground floor plus first floor. The proposal has been approved and now the new plans and drawings will go to the plan approval committee of the UT department,” the official claimed.
The Plan Approval Committee (PAC) is composed of the Deputy Commissioner, the Chief Engineer, Department of Urban Planning staff and other UT officials. Online building plans will be offered according to the procedure. With a view to improving living conditions, Chandigarh officials stated that “Even after 2018, the condominium policy has changed so that better living conditions are provided to the officials.”
However, all homes will be rebuilt by MES for the troops, and even the drawings will be provided by the consultant assigned to the Air Force. Officials said that the approval of the Chandigarh administration was the only hurdle in the whole process.
“The project is around Rs 150 crore. MES will build it entirely. It will be according to the latest standards such as 100 sqm area standard and has been modified to 125-140 sqm, among others. Instead of traditional chip floors, it will be glazed granite that will be used. There will be modular kitchens as well,” the officer added at the University of Texas.
The department stated that senior officials of the Indian Air Force’s architectural wing had also joined the meeting for this purpose.
Over the past several months, the Air Force has been holding several meetings with the Chandigarh administration in the wake of the engagement with UT for the Indian Air Force Heritage Centre.
