Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dami on Friday declared areas in Haridwar saturated by floods as “disaster prone” and postponed payment of electricity, water bills, dues and other government loans for the next three months.
Meanwhile, many places including Badrinath and Yamunotri National Highway were closed due to landslides caused by heavy rains.
The announcement came after reviewing the logging and flooding situation in Haridwar.
Al-Dami said that the distribution of relief funds will be ensured as soon as a survey is conducted in the areas affected by the disaster.
He said the government is working on a flood management plan to prevent the recurrence of this type of disaster in the future, and is preparing a comprehensive plan for drainage and construction of small channels.
He also called on the Cabinet to take steps to channel rivers to reduce future flood risks.
He also announced the construction of permanent flood relief centers.
Earlier in a meeting with the officials, the prime minister asked them to ensure the normal operation of facilities such as drinking water, health, telecom and electricity in the waterlogged areas.
Due to heavy rains in Haridwar district, 71 villages in Rorki, Laxar, Bhagwanpur and Haridwar Tehsils were flooded, forcing many families to leave their homes elsewhere, and 81 families were relocated to temporary relief centres.
Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district has been blocked at five places between Nandprayagh and Badrinath due to landslides.
According to information from the state’s Emergency Operations Centre, the Karnaprayag-Geracin National Highway has also been closed to traffic due to road washes in Kalimati near Geracin.
Rishikesh-Yamunotri National Highway closed due to debris near Darasu Division in Uttarkashi district.
A cloud explosion in Roli village, Taliesin district, Bauri district, Thursday night destroyed four residential buildings and submerged about two hectares of farmland.
In the same incident, a man’s cowshed was swept away and all the animals died in it.
