Former chief minister and opposition leader of the Haryana Assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday said he would urge the state government to roll out relief packages for those living in flood affected areas in his constituency. Hooda visited the flood-hit villages of Palwal with senior Congress leaders, including the party’s state chief, Chaudhry Udaybhan.
People from several pockets of Palwal, including Baghpur and Manjwali, have raised their demands and talked of up to 95 percent failure of crops because most of the fields are submerged under 3 to 8 feet of water. Speaking to People, Hooda claimed that the Indian Meteorological Department had sounded an alert for more rains this time but the BJP government and JJP did not take any step on time.
“The banks of the rivers have not been strengthened, and the banks not cleaned. Even a proper drainage system is not arranged. What makes matters worse is that illegal mining has changed the course of rivers and canals. The government shall give compensation of Rs 40,000 per acre to the farmers. Besides, the government should also compensate for the loss of livestock. Farmers are facing a shortage of fodder due to waterlogging.
He also discussed issues related to unemployment in the state. “In Parliament, the central government admitted that the unemployment rate in Haryana during the Congress government in 2013-14 was only 2.9 per cent, which tripled to 9 per cent in 2021-22 during the BJP-JJP government. The unemployment rate at the national level is 4.1 per cent which is the same rate in Haryana and more than double the national average,” he said.
Hooda said that the Rs 4 lakh declared for the relatives of the deceased should be increased to Rs 20 lakh.
Meanwhile, Jawahar Yadav, Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said, “If illegal mining has led to floods in Haryana, is it the same reason that has led to several parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi being flooded?”
This is a natural disaster and we have to work together and not politicize the issue. In terms of compensation, the Prime Minister has already announced compensation packages for loss of livestock, crops, and damage to homes, along with loss of life.”
