The letter written by Judge Gaurang Kanth alleged that the police personnel who were at his residence in Delhi failed to “keep the door locked” despite instructions to the effect that the judge lost his pet dog
A letter written by Judge Gaurang Kanth appeared in which the judge requested that the police personnel assigned to his residence be suspended for dereliction of duty and incompetence. The letter, written to the Joint Commission of Police (Security), Delhi Police, is dated 12 June 2023 when Justice Kanth was a judge in the Delhi High Court. It was transferred to the Kolkata High Court earlier this week.
The letter alleged that the police personnel present at his home in Delhi had failed to “keep the door locked” despite instructions to do so, resulting in the loss of his pet dog by the judge.
Judge Kanth’s letter read: “Despite being repeatedly told to keep the door locked, the security officials posted to my residence have failed to comply with my directions… Such dereliction of duty and incompetence needs immediate attention as it causes serious danger to my life and liberty.”
“The lack of management of the gate and the lack of dedication in monitoring the movement and entry and exit of the gate of my residence is intolerable. I will request that you immediately stop the officers…and conduct a thorough investigation on the above issue…and a report on the action taken in this regard will be submitted within three working days from today.”
The Center informed the appointment of Judge Kanth before the Calcutta High Court on 15 July. On the same day, the Delhi High Court Bar passed a resolution expressing concern over the bench’s recommendation to transfer Justice Kanth to the Calcutta High Court.
The Bar Association said it would adversely affect the administration of justice due to the reduction in the number of judges in the Delhi High Court and asked its members to abstain from work on July 17.
