Pune City Police on Saturday arrested a 21-year-old man who along with two others allegedly shot and robbed a tobacco merchant of cash worth Rs 4 lakh in Swarajet district late on July 19.

A Pune city police officer said they arrested the suspect identified as Sooraj Wajmod, a resident of Bavdhan, on Saturday night. “Waghmoud is a worker and works in the Market Yard area. The preliminary investigation confirms the theft as the motive for the crime. Efforts are underway to arrest the two remaining suspects. “Investigation teams have been sent to arrest them,” the officer added.

At the time of the attack, Lach Humukhlal Suratwala, 51, was on his way home to Manikbagh with an employee on two wheels at around 9pm. Police said that three men riding a motorbike on the road near Ganesh Kala Krida Manch blocked Suratwala Road and one opened fire on him.

According to the police, their investigation showed that the suspects fired four shots – three at Suratwala and one at his employee. Suratwala was hit by two bullets to his back and one of his thighs. While Suratwala fell from his bike when the bullets hit him, the shot fired at his employee did not.

Then the three men snatched the bag which was carrying Suratwala 4 lakh rupees. Suratwala is later taken to the hospital and is said to be out of danger.

Police said the stretch of road where the accident occurred had less traffic than normal due to work on the Pune metro and had no CCTV camera cover. They said their investigation showed that the suspects had been observing Suratwala prior to the beating. The investigation also showed that in the first week of this month, he was followed by three people on a motorbike when he was carrying money home at night.

He was followed again by the three suspects who asked to stop him at a point on Tilak Road on the night of 9 July. After that, Suratwala changed his way home and began taking an employee with him, the police said.
