metaNew social media app, Threads, on Tuesday launched a much-requested new feature: the Follow tab.
The new tab allows users to see chronological posts from the people they follow rather than the less cohesive, algorithmically curated content that appears in the For You feed. Many users have asked Meta executives like CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri to get the feature since the themes were first launched earlier this month.
“Ask and you shall receive,” Zuckerberg wrote in a post on Tuesday.
Meta threads added a follow up chronological feed
Meta said Tuesday that the topics update will also allow users to sort their “activity” feed by following, quotes, and reposts, allow people to see posts they’ve liked in their settings, and translate certain posts that appear in a different language.
Several users were quick to point out that the “For you” and “Follow” tabs look similar to the current layout on Twitter, which was rebranded as an “X” as part of the platform’s latest change since it was acquired by Elon Musk late last year.
But the comparisons don’t stop there. Threads are strikingly similar to Twitter, as many of Twitter’s core codes and features such as character borders have been replicated on the platform. The thread has been promoted by Meta executives such as Mosseri as a more positive “public arena” for communities “that haven’t really embraced Twitter”.
The threads were first launched on July 5 while a series of outages and controversial price limit policies affected Twitter users. The platform quickly jumped to 100 million users, though engagement with the app has since waned.
Meta said on Tuesday that it is working to bring new features to Thread as quickly as possible.
