WASHINGTON: US Vice President Kamala Harris told the chief executives of leading technology companies at a meeting Thursday that they have a “moral” responsibility to protect society from the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.
“As I share today with the CEOs of companies at the forefront of American AI innovation, the private sector has a moral, ethical, and legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of its products,” Harris said in a statement.
The vice president, who met at the White House with CEOs from Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic, said AI has “the potential to improve people’s lives and address some of society’s biggest challenges.”
At the same time, she warned, “Artificial intelligence has the potential to dramatically increase threats to safety and security, violate civil rights and privacy, and undermine public trust and faith in democracy.”
Harris said she and President Joe Biden, who briefly walked out of the meeting, are back to “develop potential new regulations and support new legislation.”
