Former US professional Patrick McEnroe has revealed that legendary tennis coach Rick Mackey is looking forward to working with Coco Gauff to improve her game.
Macci has been a hugely successful tennis coach, having coached the likes of Andy Roddick, Jennifer Capriati, Maria Sharapova, and the Williams sisters over the years. He is a seven-time winner of the United States Professional Tennis Association National Coach of the Year Award.
John McEnroe’s brother Patrick revealed that Rick Mackie had been in touch with Coco Gauff’s father to work on her forehand, which is currently her soft spot. He also stated that the 67-year-old is the perfect coach to break down the technical aspects of the game for a player.
“No one is better (than Rick Mackey) at breaking down the technical aspects of a game,” he said, while speaking on an episode of the “Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe” podcast.
According to him, he has been in touch with Coco’s father about the possibility of taking some time to try and fix this forehand. Because we all know the swing of the forehand and the technique on the forehand is very shaky.
“And Rick said to me, ‘If he can spend a significant amount of time with her, he thinks she can win multiple majors because right now she’s not solid enough from the front that he thinks she can do that right now.'” He added.
Paula Badusa outlasted Coco Gauff in straight sets at the 2023 Madrid Open. She cruised to a dominant 6-3 6-0 third-round victory over the American in their first meeting on clay.
With the win, Badosa improved her head-to-head record against Gough to 3-1. Notably, her first win over the young American came during the title race in Indian Wells in 2021.
In her post-match press conference, Badusa revealed that she had decided to target Gauff’s forehand relentlessly, a known weakness of the youngster.
“Of course, going more forehand,” she said, “because her backhand is so good, and when you like the slick there, you go over there, but I just tried to go for her forehand.”
“Yeah, sometimes just give it to her and make her do as much as she can. Yeah, that’s a bit of a tactic I can say right now. I hope you don’t read it,” Padosa added.
