Transmission substations have a larger capacity to receive power from the power generator directly. Meanwhile, distribution substations deliver electricity to homes, shops, and facilities.

Apart from the construction of substations, PGCIL as well as the government transport companies have laid 14,625 km of transmission lines across the country.

Power Grid Corporation (PGCIL) as well as government carriers have installed substations across the country with a total capacity of 75,902 megavolt-ampere (MVA) in fiscal year 2022-23. Of these, PGCIL has erected substations with a total capacity of 14,850 MVA in several states.

But it is the state transmission companies that have constructed substations with a capacity of 21,647 MVA. Substations are for both transmission and distribution. Transmission substations have a larger capacity to receive power from the power generator directly. Meanwhile, distribution substations deliver electricity to homes, shops, and facilities.

Of the total 75,902 MVA substations, 23,667 MVA are 220 kV. A senior PGCIL official said these substations bring power to the domestic as well as commercial sectors.

He said that after the substations are established, the quality of electricity will improve in various areas of cities, towns and villages. “In many areas, new substations were constructed because the existing substation was not able to carry the load. In other areas, the capacity of the substations was increased. Due to this, the power quality in these areas is better. In voltage or frequent power outages they will have a better power supply after commissioning the substation in their areas.

The last fiscal year also saw a private company, Linxon, win an order from PGCIL. The Substation Package 91 award corresponds to the expansion of the transmission network in Gujarat to increase the transmission capacity available from the interstate transportation system. The extension is expected to enhance the electricity grid in the area to meet the high demand for electricity in a growing community.

The scope of this transmission scheme includes increasing the transfer capacity at 765/400 kV ICT at Banaskantha Substation by 1 x 1500 MVA, and constructing a new 400 kV DC line at Banaskantha-Sankhari.

“It is scheduled to be commissioned to match the construction of the 400/220kV Prantij substation and the 400kV Sankhari-Prantij double-circuit line in the first half of 2025,” the official said.

In all, Linxon supplies one 765 kV bay and seven 400 kV bays under the AIS subpackage.

Apart from the construction of substations, PGCIL as well as the government carriers have laid 14,625 km of transmission lines across the country. Of the 14,625 km, 1,475 km of transmission lines were laid by PGCIL and the rest of the km were constructed by state transport companies. The private sector has also established 605 km of transmission lines. Only through transmission lines, the power generated from thermal mill or wind mill is transferred to the substation.
