Police said in a suspected honor killing case, a man dragged his niece from her home and allegedly cut her throat in Sitapur village on Saturday for eloping and marrying a man of a different caste.
They said the man surrendered at a police station with the murder weapon, the machete.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sitapur NP Singh said the 20-year-old woman had an affair with a married man from the same village.
The officer said that when the woman’s uncle found out about their relationship, he sent her to Ghaziabad where her father works.
However, a few months later, the man visited Ghaziabad, and the woman eloped with him, the officer said, adding that they were married in a court in November last year.
He said the couple returned to the village a few days ago.
On Saturday, the officer said, her uncle arrived at the house where the couple lived, dragged the woman out and slashed her throat with a machete.
The accused said that the accused surrendered at a police station with the murder weapon.
The association said that the accused had claimed that he had killed her because she had run away and married a man who was already married and of a different caste.
The police detained the accused.
