The Sunday night blast at the Maheshtala Warehouse came six days after an explosion at an illegal fireworks factory in Agra in East Midnapore district on May 16 killed 12 people.
34 people have been arrested in connection with an explosion at an illegal fireworks warehouse in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, which claimed three lives.
The detainees will appear before a lower court in Kolkata on Monday.
The Sunday night blast at the Maheshtala Warehouse came six days after an explosion at an illegal fireworks factory in Agra in East Midnapore district on May 16 killed 12 people.
The illegal warehouse at Maheshtala was on the ground floor of a private house and had been in operation for some time, local residents claimed.
They also claimed that although they knew of the warehouse’s existence, the local administration took no action.
Meanwhile, political animosity emerged over the blast, with opposition leader Sofundu Adhikari describing the current situation in West Bengal with the situation in Ukraine.
“Russia started its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. I believe if one calculates and compares the number of explosions that have occurred on Ukrainian soil so far, the number will be less than the explosions in West Bengal during this time frame,” Adhikari said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Santanu Sen of the Trinamool Congress said that while the blast event was certainly unfortunate, the opposition parties’ attempts to play politics over bodies were simply unacceptable.
