Days after a Dalit man was assaulted over a food order in Mahisagar district and died of injuries, two of the accused have been returned to judicial custody by a local court. Mahisagar District Police appeared the two accused before the examining magistrate on Monday after they were arrested on Sunday night.
Mold. s. Falvi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (SC ST Cell), Mahisagar told The Indian Express, “We arrested the accused on Sunday night. They appeared in court on Monday and were sent to judicial custody as we did not ask the police to take them into custody. There is no aspect of The investigation now requires that they be in police custody.”
Raju Vankar, the auto-rickshaw driver, died on 9 June two days after the alleged assault. He hails from Isrudha village in Mahisagar district. Police said he was seriously injured when the accused assaulted him for allegedly assaulting a package of dal patti that he had ordered from a highway restaurant in Lembadiya village of Khanpur on the evening of 7 June. Vankar was allegedly attacked by the accused—Dhanabhai, the hotel manager, and his relative, Amit Patel—when he expressed his dissatisfaction with the package delivered to him.
Congress lawmaker Vadgam Jinesh Mivani, who met his family at the SSG hospital, took aim at the police saying that when a victim was admitted to hospitals between June 7 and June 9, the police should have taken note.
The accused has been booked under Section 302 of the IPC as well as the relevant sections of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.
