Last week, Special Secretary for Persons with Disabilities Shashanka Ala wrote to all District Magistrates (DM) and Deputy Police Commissioners (DCP) to identify public facilities that could be developed under flyovers in their areas.

A meeting of PWD officials and other relevant stakeholders was held on June 6, according to the letter.

“…it is emphasized that unused spaces under bridges are misused, turned into garbage dumps and create an unhealthy environment… To address this, efforts are being made to convert these urban empty spaces into public facilities such as charging stations, play areas and offices,” Alaa said. Its mission is “spaces, libraries, and so on.”

The Special Secretary for Persons with Disabilities also asked Executive Directors and DCPs to identify public facilities that would suit a nearby area and locality in consultation with the Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) and to report these to management by 16 June.

Alaa also directed the district judges to form a committee to locate these sites. The team will consist of the DM, who will act as contract officer; DCP (traffic); Special Commissioner, Road Safety, Department of Transportation; Executive Engineers and Consultants of Persons with Disabilities from the Department of Persons with Disabilities and Transportation as its members.
