The Armenian Ministry of Defense has identified the two Indian nationals as Mohammad Asif and Mirhassan Sahajan. “Today, two Indian citizens, Mohammad Asif and Mirhassan Sahajan, who were involved in the construction work of the plant, were injured, following the fire in Azerbaijan in the direction of the mineral plant which is being built with the procedures of foreign investments in Yarsakh,” the ministry said on Twitter.

According to the Ministry of Health, the two are being treated at a regional hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. “The surgeries performed by the two foreigners who participated in the construction work of the Yarasak Metallurgical Plant, who were injured by the bullets fired by the Azerbaijani side, have been completed. The surgeries were successful. Their health condition is moderate,” the ministry said.

The men reportedly underwent surgeries at Ararat City Hospital. According to local media, one was shot in the chest and the other in the shoulder.

The Defense Ministry said the attack took place on Wednesday morning (11.45 am local time). Ministry spokesman Aram Torossian reported that the duo was working on the construction site of a metallurgical plant in Yasakh when they came under cross-border fire.

Yerasek is a small village on the western border of Armenia with the Nakhichevan region of Azerbaijan. A civilian car and another facility were hit by fire from the Azerbaijani armed forces in the direction of Yassers.

Recent tensions erupted over the construction of the steel mill. Azerbaijan said the project would pose a threat to environmental well-being in the region and would violate a United Nations agreement meant to regulate the possibility of transboundary environmental damage.

However, the Armenian Ministry of Environment dismissed these allegations as unfounded considering them unfounded with the sole aim of hindering the country’s economic progress.
