Three prisoners on trial in Patna escaped from custody on Thursday after throwing pain balm on the eyes of police officers who were escorting them to court, an official said.
Ashok Kumar, Deputy Director General (Towne), said the three, who had been lodged in Phulwari Sharif Jail on the outskirts of the city in connection with cases under the NDPS Act and the Weapons Act, were taken to the court in a prison van.
“There were five policemen inside the prison car. Two of them got out to clear the way because of a fight between two people,” said the SP deputy.
At that time, he said, the trio threw pain-relieving balm on the three remaining policemen, causing excruciating pain in their eyes.
Kumar said: “One of the policemen is still trying to resist the escaping prisoners and his arm was broken in the process.”
“We are inquiring about how prisoners on trial managed to get the balm and why the two policemen got out of the car, which is something they should not have done,” said the SP deputy.
He added that searches are underway for the three fugitives, all of whom are residents of Patna and in their twenties.
