Documents relating to sale and purchase of real estate, worth Rs 17.80 lakh in cash and some other items have been confiscated after fresh raids this week against some “famous” builders, CAs and others linked to slain political gangster leader Atiq Ahmed, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Saturday.

The agency said in a statement that the searches were conducted from June 14 to 15 in 10 buildings in Prayagraj, Lucknow and Delhi.

Several associates and associates of the late Atiq Ahmed including “famous” builders and chartered accountants were covered during the procedure which resulted in the forfeiture of Rs 17.80 in cash, documents relating to sale and purchase of real estate, corporate financial documents, bank statements, mobile phones and laptops.
The agency said physical and forensic analysis of the seized evidence is continuing.

The money laundering case against Ahmed and his aides stems from the CBI FIR filed on the directive of the Supreme Court to investigate allegations of kidnapping, extortion and assault against the mafia turned politician and his men.

Atiq Ahmed was a history writer and he was running a mafia gang which was involved in various crimes of serious nature since a long time. About 100 information reports of crimes related to murder, extortion, land grabbing etc. were filed against him at various police stations.

“During the investigation it was found that by indulging in criminal activities since 1989 and by usurping government and other property and land, Atiq Ahmed amassed huge property in his own name and in the name of his family members as well as in the name of his associates and other Benamidars (in whose name stands Benami property),” said ED.

The ED first conducted searches in this case on 12-13 April which resulted in the forfeiture of Rs 84.68 crores in cash, gold bars worth Rs 60 lakh, gold and diamond jewelery worth Rs 2.85 crores, digital devices and various physical documents and records.

Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at close range by three men posing as journalists on 15 April when police personnel were escorting them to Prayagraj Medical College for an examination.
