St. Louis: At least one teen was killed and nine others were injured in the Heavy gunfire in downtown St. Louis on Sunday (local time), CNN reported.
The shooting took place during the night in the city center shortly after 1 a.m. (Central time), inside a building where a party was being held.
In the shooting, a 17-year-old boy died, according to Mayor Teshorah Jones.
Police Chief Robert Tracy said during a press conference Sunday that a 17-year-old suspect is in custody.
“This Father’s Day, families in the St. Louis area woke up to the news of yet another mass shooting,” Jones said.
“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, tenfold,” Jones said. “My heart goes out to all the families who are hurting today. Everyone who attends will carry with them the physical and mental scars of their lives Gun violence that tore their lives apart.”
Meanwhile, the injured victims ranged between 15 and 19 years old, according to what he said. He added that a 17-year-old woman was run over while running from the scene and had serious spinal injuries.
Tracy said police recovered several firearms from the scene, including an AR-15 rifle and a handgun.
The police are investigating who had power over the office building and who was in charge of the party.
Given the number of mass shootings happening across the United States, Mayor Jones expressed fear and said a place that was once safe is now no longer, according to CNN.
Speaking at the press conference, Mayor Jones said, “There were places to go and things to do and we were safe. There aren’t many more.”
“For our children who live in families struggling to make ends meet, where can they go to see their friends and have fun?” she added.
Jones said St. Louis officials are working to create more safe spaces for children to keep them away from dangerous areas, such as where a party is held on Sunday, by leveraging resources to invest in youth programs.
Mass shootings are an increasingly worrying problem in the United States.
US President Joe Biden has repeatedly protested against stricter gun laws. Earlier, in February, Biden said the country needed more resources to reduce gun crime, and it was time to ban assault weapons again amid a rise in mass shootings.
In his first major address to a divided Congress, after Republicans took control of the House, Joe Biden said, “10 years ago Prohibition was law, mass shootings decreased. After Republicans let it end, mass shootings tripled. Let’s get the job done and outlaw.” Offensive weapons again.
