A business administration student from a reputed college in Pune was recently caught in possession of 36.36 kg of marijuana worth Rs 7.27 lakh.

Police said the accused, Pankaj Saliyar Madhavi, 23, had bought the seized contraband from those working in marijuana plantations in the jungles of Naxal affected areas in Gadchiroli district.

Acting on a tip-off received by Constable Vijay Campbell, a team of the Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested Madhavi near a college in Ambegaon Badruk on Sunday. Police confiscated marijuana from two suitcases in his possession.

They added that Madavi is a native of Masili village in Korchi Taluka in Gadchiroli district, and currently resides in Ambegaon Badruk.

Chief Inspector of Police Vinayak Gaikwad of Pune Police Anti-Narcotics Cell said, “Madhavi came to Pune from Gadchiroli to study. He is in his last year of BBA course in a famous college in Pune. But he got into marijuana business. During the investigation, Madhavi said he He got the contraband seized from… the affected jungle areas of Gadchiroli. At first, he brought a few kilograms of marijuana to Pune. But as he started getting more clients, he now decided to bring a large amount of marijuana…”

The FIR against Madhavi was filed at Bharati Police Vidyapeth Station under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. An investigation is underway to identify his accomplices.

In a separate case, the police arrested three youths, including a BBA student from another college in the city, also a native of Gadchiroli district, in possession of about 55 kilograms of marijuana worth Rs 11.14 lakh.

Police have identified the accused as Nikesh Pitambar Anul, 22, and Ram Rajesh Pais, 20, from Gadchiroli, and Hrithik Kailas Tampurni, 21, from Bhandara.

Acting on a tip received by Havaldar Chetan Gaikwad and Ravindra Rokdi, a team of police led by Inspector Sunil Thubti arrested the two accused in Kharadi bypass on Pune Ahmednagar Road on Sunday.

The cops confiscated their cell phones and bags of marijuana. A crime has been filed against the accused at Chandan Nagar Police Station, under sections of the NDPS Act.

Chief Inspector of Police Sunil Thubti said Pais is a BBA student at a college in Pune. Two other accused are studying, but not in Pune. “We have learned that Accused Anul has a previous criminal record,” Thawbti said. An investigation is underway to determine how the accused purchased the marijuana and to whom they planned to sell it.
