Three stray dogs were trapped in one of the four cages set up by the forest department to hunt tigers in Valsad Nagar Palika district on Sunday. While the dogs were released, officials were still searching for the female leopard. This is the second time such an incident has been reported in days. Two days earlier, a stray dog was trapped in the same cage and released by forest officials.
Concerned officials said that a tiger was seen in the CCTV footage, outside the row of houses in Mogwadi district of Valsad Nagar Balika district on June 12. The tiger was spotted for three consecutive days on CCTV cameras at different locations. There is an agricultural field in the vicinity with permanent crops of sugar cane and mango groves which are believed to be the hiding place of the big cats. Officials said that after the tiger was spotted, locals were afraid to come out of their homes as soon as it got dark.
Local residents reported the incident to the Forest Range Office of the Northern Valsad Division and asked officials to install cages to catch the tiger.
On June 12, after watching CCTV footage and pugmarks, officials installed four cages and kept the chicken as bait. The cages were covered with tree branches.
On Sunday, locals heard dogs barking and found stray dogs trapped in cages. “We have installed four cages – one each in Magrawi and Nana Kwada and two in Thrawada. The distance between two cages in Thrawada area is 1.5 km. A female leopard has been spotted with two cubs and they seem to be hiding in the vicinity. Nisha Raj, Deputy Governor of Valsad in Forest said Nisha Raj. : “We are constantly watching the area, including by means of foot patrols by our staff, so that the tiger can be caught.”
Meanwhile, Pradeep Vaghela, Range Forest Officer, said, “This is the second time that three stray dogs have been caught in a cage in Mograwadi. Two days ago, a stray dog was caught in the cage. We are also planning to install another cage to catch a female. Tiger. The locals here feed stray dogs.”
