With DJ Clayton Rodrigues still in Sharjah jail after a court there sentenced him to 25 years in prison in a drug case last month, Mumbai Police will soon file an indictment allegedly framed in the drug case by baker Anthony Paul.

Once the indictment is submitted, a police officer said, it can be translated into Arabic and his family can send it to Rodriguez’s attorney.

Actor Chrisann Pereira, who was also allegedly charged by Paul, has been acquitted in the drug case and is likely to return to Mumbai in the next few days.

The 37-year-old Mumbai-based DJ was the second victim of Paul, who allegedly got him caught up in a drug case and got arrested by the Sharjah airport authorities.

An officer, who is part of the investigation, said, “Rodriguez, who was convicted last month by the Sharjah Court, was sentenced to 25 years in prison. We do not file a separate IRR in his case since he was convicted in this case. However, we will state in our charge sheet how he Anthony Paul framed him too, like Chrisann, and was unaware that the drugs were planted in a cake he was carrying to Sharjah.”

After Rodrigues was convicted earlier this month, his family, through their lawyers in Sharjah, have appealed the conviction.

“We hope the court there will appreciate the fact that a legal document of the Indian government indicated that Rodriguez was not involved in carrying drugs but was put on the case,” the officer said.

Rodrigues can seek some hope from the fact that a Mumbai-based couple — Mohammed Shahid and Anibha Qureshi — who were used as drug mules and convicted in Qatar, were released in 2021 after it was found they were unaware of the drugs’ existence. in the bag they were carrying.

Paul and his partner Rajesh Porat were arrested in April by the crime branch of the Mumbai Police after it emerged that Paul had tried to take revenge on five people by sending them to Sharjah with articles laden with drugs.

While three others managed to escape, Rodriguez and Pereira were caught with the drugs. In Rodriguez’s case, Paul was upset with him over a comment he made when their family went on a farm trip last year.

In January of this year, Borat, on Paul’s instructions, pretends to be an event manager and calls Rodrigues up and offers him a job at an event in Sharjah.

When he was about to travel to Sharjah on February 6, Borat presented him with a cake with drugs hidden in it.
According to the investigation by the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police, Paul then contacted the Sharjah Airport authorities and informed them that Rodrigues was carrying drugs in a bun.

When the police check the brownie box, they find drugs inside with a note saying he has more drugs if anyone needs them.

Subsequently, the Sharjah Airport Police arrested Rodriguez, and since then he has been placed in Sharjah Prison.
