NL Cy Young Champion Sandy Alcantara is having an absolutely horrible season. After another poor start in which he allowed five runs on 10 hits across seven innings in a losing effort against the Toronto Blue Jays, Cy Young’s former ERA ballooned to 4.97.

Last season, Sandy Alcantara’s ERA was just 2.28, much better than his current numbers. His xERA in 2023 is 4.23, which is more respectable, but still not an excellent metric.

However, despite some poor performances, the Miami Marlins are not going to the DFA. They probably won’t sit on it or something. Despite what appears to be a bad season, it’s still a well-deserved 1.5 fWAR. With Marilyn surprisingly competitive, they are happy to wait it out and let Alcantara get back into shape.

What’s wrong with Sandy Alcantara

Besides the obvious statistical falls, Sandy Alcantara is not the same pitcher he was last year for some reason. Looking at his accessories may give some insight.

Last season, he was in the 66th percentile in average pace out, which means he didn’t get hit very often. This year, he’s in the 43rd percentile. He’s in the 75th percentile for expected batting average, which means he’s not out of luck as a pitcher. This season, the 29th percentile.

The biggest surprise is that he’s in the xSLG’s 49th percentage after being in the 82nd percentage last season with the Marlins. The hits he allows are harder and he goes to extra bases more often.
