The statement by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis comes days after Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Udhav Thackeray targeted PM Modi asking why he was touring the US instead of visiting Manipur to restore peace there.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah was sufficient to handle the situation in violence-hit Manipur and there was no need for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the northeastern state for the purpose.
His statement comes days after President Shiv Sena (UBT) and former Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray took aim at Prime Minister Modi asking why he was touring the US instead of visiting Manipur to restore peace there.
Fadnavis again credited Prime Minister Modi for taking the lead in developing coronavirus vaccines in India and said that because of him, all 140 crore citizens were given free doses otherwise “crores of people died”.
Without naming Thackeray, Fadnavis said in a speech to a rally in Karad town in Maharashtra’s Satara district, “A few days ago, a leader from Maharashtra said Prime Minister Modi is visiting America but not Manipur. I would like to tell him that our Union Minister Amit Shah Enough to deal with the situation in Manipur. There is no need for Modiji to go there.”
“You (Thakerai) have not even gone from ‘Mattushree’ (his personal residence) to Worli (a nearby suburb of Mumbai), but you are telling Modiji to go to Manipur instead of America. Does he have any right even to talk?” said the senior BJP leader. about her?”.
Violent clashes erupted in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organized in the hill areas on 3 May to protest the Meitei community’s claim to Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. To date, nearly 120 people have died and more than 3,000 have been injured.
Union Minister Shah called an all-party meeting on the situation in Manipur on 24 June. Fadnavis, in his speech in Akola on Sunday, gave credit to Prime Minister Modi for developing vaccines against coronavirus in India.
However, Thackeray later mocked Fadnavis and asked: “If Modi Ji had made the vaccine, what were the scientists doing? You said Modiji made the vaccine. When Udhavji was Chief Minister of Maharashtra, he ran the parade like someone holding the reins of a horse?”
“Today, I emphasize it and say that the prime minister made the vaccines because only five countries in the world can manufacture the vaccine vials. Two countries had the raw materials (for the vaccines) and did not share them with others. It was Modiji’s relationship with these countries that helped us get the raw materials,” he said. .
He said the prime minister met the scientists, gave Rs 1,800 crore advance and got the coronavirus vaccine vials, under which all the country’s 140 crore citizens were vaccinated for free. Fadnavis said: “Was it our case? We might have been standing beggars before the United States or Russia demanded vaccines. And if those countries had given priority to vaccinating their population over us, the death toll would have been hundreds of people here.”
The former prime minister said it would have resulted in piles of dead bodies here and we wouldn’t be able to meet in public yet.
“We have a visionary Prime Minister, who not only brilliantly dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, but also provided free food grains to the poor for two years,” he said, adding, “It is a world record in the name of Modiji.” The United Nations even mentioned in its report that it is because of Prime Minister Modi’s free food grain distribution program, our citizens did not face starvation the way people in some other countries did, he claimed.
