India’s Energy Ministry said on Friday that energy tariffs in India will be reduced by up to 20% during solar hours and up to 20% during peak hours under new amendments to electricity rules, in a move aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy.
The amendments introduced a 24/7 tariff and will come into effect from April 2025 for all consumers except agriculture.
“Since solar energy is cheaper, the tariff during sun hours will be lower, thus consumers benefit,” Energy Minister RK Singh said in a statement.
“During non-solar hours, thermal and hydro energy is used as well as gas-based capacity – its cost is higher than that of solar energy – this will be reflected in the time tariff.”
